Thrifting, lately

And by lately, I mean months and months ago. Just haven't gotten around to posting these guys yet.

Milk glass baking dishes from the local Goodwill, picked up for two dollars apiece. The rectangular ones are Anchor Hocking Fire King and the square one is GlasBake.

Love the just slightly curved handles on the Fire King pieces. It's those little details that get me.

Sometimes it's tough to decide whether or not to make a thrift store purchase. My midcentury fondue pot, for instance, is gorgeous but remains unused to this day. Eventually I'll have to decide whether to let it find a new home. But baking dishes are always a no brainer for me. Useful, because I cook a lot, and if I ever end up with too many I'll just drop off my newer ones at the thrift store for someone else to find.

  1. That fondue pot is gorgeous. If you are still wanting to try fondue, here is the recipe we use: http://saltandchocolate.blogspot.com/2009/07/fondue-field-hockey-fun-party.html
It's very retro but so delicious!

  4. i think my friend uses her fondue pot as an ice bucket sometimes - you could try that. i got some baking dishes similar to these last summer, have no idea what brand they are though. i got them from a salvation army in middle of nowhere pennsylvania because this kind of thing cannot be found in new york for cheap. i lurve using them for baking bread.

  7. Anytime I see them, I'm tempted to buy vintage Anchor & Pyrex baking dishes & bowls. This is not helping. ;)

  8. This makes me excited!! I love glassware, haha. I guess I'm a cooking nerd :P I always crush on your goodwill buys! Our Salvation Army has half off everything days on Wednesdays and I seriously need to get my a$$ down there.

  9. Thanks for the fondue pot suggestions, guys! I really do want to get it into circulation in my kitchen.

@ The French - I haven't had better luck at any particular LA thrift store, so I'm probably not the one to give suggestions. What I've found works best is just dropping my my local thrift store on a regular basis. Some days I find absolutely nothing, some days I score big time. The good stuff goes pretty quickly, I think, so it's more a matter of luck than anything else.

I'm usually at the Goodwill that is on my way home. Sometimes I'll drive downtown to visit the St. Vincent de Paul thrift store because it's so huge! They have tons of furniture, if you're ever looking for big stuff.

  10. I have some Fire King bowls with handles that I absolutely love. I pulled one out of the dishwasher yesterday and found that it was cracked. I was so sad!

  12. Yeah but you HAD to buy the midcentury fondue pot! Even if you don't use it for another 5 years, when you do you will be so glad you found it.

I have a set of thrifted midcentury fondue forks that I've never used. Probably because I don't have a fondue pot.

    Maybe we should share?

  13. Great find! My daughter and I have been replacing all of our plastic containers with glass - definitely going thrifting to see what I can find now! :)

  15. I think it's just perfectly fine to buy and enjoy things (even supposedly "practical" things) just for the sake of their beauty. And these are indeed lovely. :)
